1841-Giselle
One of the most famous ballets performed in history was Giselle, and was the dance that started the Romantic Era. In the ballet, Giselle, a woman who falls in love with a man, dies of a broken heart when she discovers his deception toward her. In the second act, Giselle, in her grave, is summoned by the Queen of the Willis and virgins who died from men who deceived them, to become one of her own, and join them in their haunting of young men. The ghosts would seduce young lovers, causing them to dance to their death.
The ballet relates to the whole mystical and fairyland-like idea that so well defined the Romantic Period. Not only was the ballet popular but the role of Giselle was considered a major honor. A dancer had to have the perfect technique, poise, gracefulness, and drama skills to earn the part.
