Russian Ballet
Russian Ballet dominated the 20th century in the dancing world. Russian music, art, themes, and subjects became very popular all throughout Europe. Russian Folklore was the basis of the many new ballets written during this century.
The dancer that helped define this period the most was probably Anna Pavlova (1881-1931). She was the most acknowledged Prima Ballerina of the Imperial School of Ballet and is considered to be one of the greatest ballerinas to this day. She traveled with the Ballet Russes, a very popular group of dancers that introduced Russian Ballet to Europe, and was one of their principle dancers. Pavlova was the first dancer to tour around the world. One of the best male dancers of the 20th century was Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950) who was also a well-known choreographer. He, too, was a principle dancer for the Ballet Russes.
