"History of Ballet." National Ballet & Academy Trust of India. NBATI, 21 Mar. 2009. Web. 11 Nov. 2012..
This text informs us of the history of ballet. It states the time it first originated, how it changed from strictly male practice to a more feminine one. There is also information on how it made its way over to the eastern part of the world (Americas).
This is a reliable source because it comes from an acknowledged and well-known ballet and arts school. It was the first western dance school recognized abroad for India’s international standards in their program. I incorporated information from this site mainly in the Romantic Era section.
Simon-Poland, Karyn. "The History of Russian Ballet." Woodlands Civic Ballet. Catholic University of America, n.d. Web. 21 Oct. 2012.
This text states the early developments of Russian ballet in each century, starting in the 17th making its way up to the 20th. It explains ways it has changed throughout each century and how that has made it what it is today. This will help me in that it gives a time-line of ballet events, useful in how it has progressed over the centuries.
This is a reliable source because the writer, Karyn Simon-Poland, is a well accredited dance instructor and teacher. Also, she founded a well-known ballet studio in Woodland, Texas. Because this source gave me specific, reliable dates, I used them in my timeline.
The Art of Dance. Chicago, Illinois: Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc, 1991. Print.
In this informative text, it explains many aspects to the art of dance. The main sources I will be focusing on are “From amateur to professional”, Changes in attitude towards dance”, “The three-phase choreographic process”, and “Types of dance: Ballet”. Each of these sections pertains to the art of classical ballet itself, ways it has changed and developed, throughout the centuries, and what life for a professional ballet dance is like.
This is a reliable source because these pieces of writings are out of an encyclopedia, where information has to be accurate. Also, it gives its own resources and reference page at the end of the section for each piece of writing. I incorporated information from this text in all sections except for 20th Century Ballet and Ballet Today. It also gave the information for the Ballet Notation section.
"The History of Ballet." Dancing Online, History of Ballet. Charleston Ballet, n.d. Web. 24 Oct. 2012.
This text informs the reader of the history and anything else you would want to know about ballet. I gives information about where if first began and how it even started. There is a section on proper form and even the physics of the art. Also, at the end, it gives a whole list of terminology for ballet. This terminology will be useful in that I will sound informed and professional in my project.
This is a reliable source because it was written by a ballet institution and museum. It gives credible information about multiple ballet productions as well as books and articles to look up, as well. In my project, you can find information from this source in the Renaissance Period section.
Beales, John W. "Romantic Era." The Ballet. N.p., 4 Sept. 2007. Web. 8 Dec. 2012.
This text gives history about ballet from its earliest stages to its most recent forms of it. It gives many links to all the different stages ballet took throughout the centuries including that of Russian Ballet, Britain Ballet, and the eras of ballet used and described in my project.
This is a reliable source because it is a website made for dancers. It not only gives history of the art but information about technique and performance for a dancer.
"Ballet." Core Of Culture. Core of Culture, n.d. Web. 10 Dec. 2012.
This website gives a step-by-step process of ballet from beginning to end of its creation. Not only does it give its own time-line for each period of dance, but also important dancers and ballets of the time.
This is a reliable source in that it is a website about cultures and their dances. It cites its works and much of the information comes from books and informative texts of the art. I mainly used this cite for timeline dates, important people, and for the Ballet Today and 20th Century Ballet sections.
